The Roman Empire was a time of many new ideas in both the arts and other realms. The Romans were very influential architects as well. They originated the dome. Nowadays the dome is a popular architectural feature, and that invention is all thanks to the Romans. Also, their buildings, like the Colosseum, were designed to hold tens of thousands of people. Buildings like this used very intricate and detailed planning and design to accommodate all of the people. The Romans were extremely influential architects and their legacy is visible in many modern buildings.

The Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 27-25 BC. Built by Marcus Agrippa.
The Pantheon has withstood through many disasters, yet it is still standing to this day. The Pantheon is an amazing example of Roman architecture because the Greek elements are visible, yet the new, Roman styles are also prevalent. For instance, the front portion of the building is rectangular and has many columns supporting it, just like the Greeks would have done. However, the back portion of the temple is circular and has a dome on top of it. This was revolutionary in architecture for its time. This dome was the largest dome in the world, then in 1420 Brunelleschi built a bigger one in Florence, Italy. The Romans were people who adopted the Greek style, and elaborated in their own creative way, and that is very obvious when looking at the Pantheon.

The Temple of Saturn, Rome, Italy, 497 BC. Restored by Lucius Munatius Plancus in 42 BC.
The Temple of Saturn is another example of Pagan architecture. The temple was honoring the god Saturn and the celebration of Saturnalia. Again, the Greek influence is visible through the columns, which are Ionic. This monument is important because it very clearly shows the relationship between Roman and Greek architecture and how the Romans modeled their buildings after the Greeks.
